Flowers bloom in the back regions of Petoskey State Park

004

Over the hill from the Tannery Creek Campground at Petoskey State Park is a meadow that local kids called Blood Lake. Over fifty years ago, the nearby tannery dumped discharge into this earthen bowl. The pipe is still visable at the far end of this area. Now, only plants with shallow root systems such as this beautiful flower can grow here. I wonder, how many more years will it be before the underground toxins dissipate  and large trees can thrive?
